Expert Tip: How to Pair Wine and Food Like a Pro

Hey friends wine lovers how are you? Certified wine and spirits professional Marc Supsic here, founder of Wine Living. Have you ever wondered how wine experts and Sommeliers are able to pair wine and food so easily? It’s really not as hard as it seems, and today I’m gonna give you a secret that’s basically gonna recalibrate your thinking and boost your wine and food pairing skills.

Okay, so the trick to pairing wine and the food together is pretty simple. Are you ready for it? You have to think of wine as a food! Now, if you’ve watched some of my other videos you’ve probably heard me going on and on about how some white wines can taste like lemons and limes or oranges, Kiwis, pears and apples and even mango or passionfruit.

.. and sometimes I talk about red wines tasting like cherries or raspberries, strawberries and even blueberries. Wine is obviously just grape juice, so all this fruit here is not really in the glass, but the chemical compounds that make them smell and taste the way they do, are! So when you start thinking of your wine as a food, being built out of all these different flavors that you’re already familiar with, it makes it a lot easier to pair with other foods.

If your white wine has flavors of apple or pear in it think about dishes that you would cook with apples or pears, for example a roast pork loin! And if you have a red wine that tastes like raspberries, something like that, might go with a nice creamy Brie.

Blueberries are beautiful with duck breast, so if your wine tastes like blueberries, pair it up with some duck breast. If you’ve got a really citrusy lemony white wine, well we happen to know that lemons are a natural complement to shellfish and seafood so partner that citrusy white up with some crab or lobster.

For example, if your red wine tastes like cranberries, why not pair it up with Thanksgiving dinner? If your white wine tastes like pineapples, try pairing it up with an Easter ham. So hopefully you get the basic idea of how wine and food pairing can work but of course there’s one caveat – you’re gonna have to know what the wine tastes like before you can pair it with the food, and unfortunately or fortunately, there’s no real easy way around that, other than to do a lot of practice tasting and take notes.

(Or watch my videos) Learning to taste these nuances in wine is something that takes time and practice, even the best chefs have to taste the wine as they’re cooking in the kitchen, so that they can tweak and adjust their recipes.

Once you have a better understanding of what kind of flavors are coming out of your glass, it makes it so much easier to pair up with food. It’s fun, and the possibilities are endless! Alright, everybody thanks so much for watching.
