First and foremost, my goal is to taste for quality, but I will also place an emphasis on enjoyability.

Finally, at the big reveal, I will compare and reveal if price has had an impact on the ranking results. We will answer the question, “Are Rioja Reserva wines worth paying the extra money?”

5 wines are Reserva, which means they were aged for a total of 3-years or more before release, with at least 1 of those years aging in oak barrels. These are the most expensive wines in the tasting.

4 wines are Crianza, which means the wine had to be aged for a total of 2-years or more before release, with at least 1 of those years aging in oak barrels. These are generally tiered as less expensive than Reserva wines.

1 wine is simply called a Rioja (formerly called Joven), and it is a “Tinto” with very little oak aging. These wines are typically the least expensive offerings from the region.
