We are in Alta Valle Isarco, Alto Adige, at the entrance to the Val Pusteria. Griesserhof is a small, fantastic winemaker here in the land of Kerner and Sylvaner wines. Today, high-quality, predominantly white wines, characterised by their fresh and fruity elegance, grow on these fertile glacial moraine hills.
THE PERFECT SOIL FOR SYLVANER WINE
First Griesserhof’s vineyard is on a hill called “Gols”, a steep glacial moraine in the middle of the valley. It is different from all the other vineyards in Valle Isarco, wich are usually on the left or on the right side of the valley: this hill is exactly in the middle, hit by the sun at 180° and continually caressed by the winds. The perfect mix for white wines, and for Sylvaner wine in particular!
Another peculiarity is the type of soil. This is an area formed by glaciers, and it is stratified: below is the clay, above the gravel. There is the perfect temperature range and the perfect soil which gives the style to their white wines: salty and fruity taste.
THE LAST SAUVIGNON TO BE HARVESTED!
At this altitude they begin the harvest rather late: they start with the first ones around on 20th september until the end of october. Probably the last to harvest in Italy!
Griesserhof has another peculiarity: it is the northernmost Sauvignon producer in Italy. Over here, there are no other Sauvignon vineyards on the way to Austria. This Sauvignon is the last to be harvested!
