We travel to Igoeti, just 45 mins from downtown Tbilisi to find out what a winemaker from Champagne is creating in Georgia.
Bastien Warskotte originally comes from the French Champagne, where he grew up in the family of a winegrower. Fascinated by wine and sparkling wine making, he graduated from the University of Burgundy and went to different regions of France and eventually the world to gain experience and knowledge in wineries including Bordeaux, Provence, Australia, South Africa and Canada. Finally, in 2016, Bastien was able to fulfill both his professional and personal dreams by founding his own winery in distant Georgia with his Georgian wife Nino Gvantseladze, with “Ori Marani”. Bastien’s winery is correspondingly young, so he does not yet have his own productive vineyards. Instead, the grapes come from Shida Kartli, Kakheti and Imeretia, where he buys them from small families of winegrowers who are familiar to him, who pay great attention to detail and whose working methods he knows. Ori Marani is located in the village of Igoeti in the Shida Kartli region and focuses primarily on the artisan production of high quality sparkling wines with minimal residual sugar content (less than 3g per liter), so-called Brut Natures. The philosophy of Ori Marani is to gather Georgian and occidental specificities of wine making with an authentic approach. Accordingly, the name Ori Marani means in Georgian “two wine cellars”, a wink for the two countries France and Georgia and their respective wine-growing influences. In fact, all wines are grown in Qvevri and/or old French oak barrels, which gives each cuvée a unique identity.
