The Kumeu River Winery is located just outside the town of Kumeu, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) northwest of central Auckland, in New Zealand’s North Island. It is particularly known for its Burgundian-style Chardonnays, of which it produces several expressions. The wines are critical favorites having received various international awards and accolades from Wine critics.
The winery was founded as San Marino Vineyards by the Brajkovich family in 1944, seven years after they had emigrated from Croatia. By the late 1970s it had a solid reputation based on hybrid grape varieties used for fortied wines and everyday reds and whites.
In the 1980s, the current generation of brothers Milan, Paul and Michael Brajkovich MW became more involved in the business – more recently their sister Marianna has also joined them. The company transitioned focus to high-quality production, with a focus on Burgundy-inspired Chardonnay. The Kumeu River Wines name was adopted in 1986.
In addition to the estate in the Kumeu region, the Rays Road vineyard was acquired in 2017, located in the Hawke’s Bay region, it had been established in 2008 as a joint venture between Trinity Hill and Pascal Jolivet a producer from France’s Loire Valley. Predominantly based on limestone soils and significantly more elevated than most vineyards in Hawkes Bay, the site produces wines on a style that has been likened to Chablis .
